Working from the pochade to develop larger scale work.

A Change of Season

A seasonal change from late summer into autumn and now winter, often provides a stimulus to new landscape painting possibilities. A number of bright, warm autumn days allowed for the exploration of previously visited landscape locations and an opportunity to see them in a changed light. This example, produced using the pochade, shows a composition from the high moor on Dartmoor. As well as compositional simplicity, I managed to make use of value in exploiting a centre of interest. From this study 6"x8" I have gone on to produce a 30"x40" oil. Capturing the directness of the original sketch was always going to be the challenge when developing an idea on a larger scale. This is one of a number of scetches to be worked up over the coming weeks.
